About Gayton

Gayton is a village located just over seven miles east of Kings Lynn, and lies on the B1145 road. The estimated population according to the 2011 Census, was that there were 1,432 residents living in 657 households. The parish has a total area of 8.82 square miles (22.8 km2).

Unlike many Norfolk villages, Gayton is a working village with many facilities and amenities. These include a church, a primary school, a pub, a butcher/delicatesse, a petrol station/car repair garage, a convenience store and post office, a fish and chip shop, and a hair salon. Social facilities include a Women’s Institute, Girl Guides and a a thriving social club. There is a children’s playground which had its equipment extensively upgraded in 2012, and again in 2015 with the addition of a new skateboard park. New playground equipment was provided in Gayton Thorpe in 2023.

The Gayton and Gayton Thorpe Neighbourhood Plan 2019-2036 was passed at referendum on 9 November 2023. At the referendum 86.6% of votes cast supported adoption of the Neighbourhood Development Plan, meaning that the Borough Council is obliged to ‘make’ (adopt, or bring into legal force) the Plan. The plan enables the parish council and community to have a greater say in how the character of the area can be protected over the coming years and what form new development should take, to enhance the character of the built environment. Details on the Neighbourhood Plan can be accessed from this website.

More information regarding Gayton an Gayton Thorpe can be found in the 2006 Parish plan, which can be downloaded as an Acrobat PDF file. Please note that this plan was produced a number of years ago and does not reflect the current position regarding planning for the villages. However much of the background information about the villages is still interesting and relevant.

Did you know that there were around 916,200 people living in Norfolk on Census Day, 21 March 2021?

That’s an increase of around 58,300 people, or an increase of 6.8% compared with Census Day 2011. This compares with an 8.3% increase for the East of England and a 6.3% increase for England and Wales.

Within Norfolk, South Norfolk had the highest percentage increase (14.4% increase), with Great Yarmouth having the lowest increase (2.6% increase), compared with the last census. More information on Census data relating to Gayton will be available soon.

Day and Date of Parish Council Meetings

Meetings of Gayton Parish Council take place on the first Tuesday of the month except in the month August when there is no meeting held.

The Parish Council is interested in hearing from its residents. You can contact the Clerk, Chairman or any Councillor and issues can be raised by email, phone call or letter.

You are also welcome to attend any Parish Council Meeting and there is a standing agenda item near the start of the meeting where a member of the public may use up to 5 minutes to raise an issue or provide information to the Parish Council.

Please note that issues raised at the meeting will not be subject to a decision at that meeting. Parish Council processes require that agendas are issued to the public to review at least 3 working days ahead of the meeting, where decisions can be made.
